English 4, Post 8 , 'English Language challenges'

I have only had two English courses at university and I really enjoyed both of them, I loved the use of blogs, for me it was a lot of fun to write about some topics. I have always found it easier to write in English than to speak it, I can understand what people say to me, but I struggle to know what to say and how to respond, but they always say practice makes perfect, so I just need to practice the speaking part more to get better. My cousins were born in New Zealand, so they speak almost no Spanish, in order to talk to them I have to do it in English, I talk to them a couple of times a week and almost always by video call since they are little and don't have a cell phone yet, I still struggle to understand some words because they have English accents and I learned English with an American accent throughout my schooling. When I was in school I spoke more in English because besides having English classes I also had Chinese classes, all my Chinese teachers were from China so they ...

English 4, Post 7, 'Changes to my study programme'

It has always been said that Chile has longer university careers compared to other countries, and that is due to the "common plan", in my opinion the common plan is a waste of time, you pass the same subject that was seen in the last years of school, I would like the common plan to be eliminated to move directly to the most interesting branches. Our faculty is quite old and that can be seen in the laboratories, the infrastructure is old and looks worn out, and although this does not affect the way of learning or the development of practical activities, visually it does not look good, the university is one of the most prestigious in the country, and I would really like to renew the laboratories of the faculty. The faculty makes good use of technology and especially in this pandemic, that is something that I really liked, in the laboratories there are very modern and crazy machines like in a movie. The way of teaching of most of the professors is very clear and precise, if you...

English 4, Post 6, 'Time Travel to the future'

In this blog I have to write about something I don't like very much, traveling to the future, would I like to travel to the future? No, the future scares me, it scares me to know that climate change ended life, that maybe in the future people will be suffering from lack of water and pollution. But this blog is about traveling to the future so I will have to write something, even if I don't like it. I would like to travel 30 years ahead, to see if mankind did something against global warming, to see if the animals that are now in danger of extinction still exist. But I should be careful because movies have taught that you can't meet yourself when you travel back in time because that would be fatal. I would also like to know if my family and friends are okay, to know if something bad happened to them so that when I go back in time I can try to fix it. I would also like to know how I am doing, if I accomplished my goals, if I finished college. What I would hate about travelin...

English 4, Post 5, 'My future job'

Imagen
In the future I would love to work in the research and development of vaccines or medicines, this work is never done outdoors because the research is done in a laboratory, so if you work in the area of research and development of medicines you will almost never see the sunlight, I like that because I hate the sun and the heat.  Although there are some branches of pharmaceutical companies in Chile, most probably if you want to get a job in this area you have to travel abroad, most are in USA and Europe, also if you want to be a researcher in any scientific area you will have to go abroad because here there are no such laboratories and Chile does not invest in science, so in short if you want to be a scientist you have to go abroad. Living abroad is an experience I want in my life. The truth is that I have no idea what the salary is for research and development of medicines or vaccines, but the approximate salary for a biochemist in Chile would be one million Chilean ...

Only murders in the building, is a new series from star+, I watched the whole thing in two days, here's a little review. The first seconds of this series are very striking. Some cops enter a building while 2 of the 3 main characters are coming down the stairs screaming, they go looking for the other main character, Selena Gomez (she is the reason I watched the series), and they find Selena on her knees with a bloody body and she tells them: It's not what you think. This series is a satire towards the criminal shows that were very fashionable. In this series the 3 characters are fans of a crime podcast, this podcast is what unites the characters as they are very different people. One is an unemployed 70 year old actor, another is an unemployed Broadway director and Selena is a young design student. The plot begins 2 months before the opening scene, the three neighbors never speak to each other until an incident occurs in the building where they live that leads them to realize th...

English 4, post 3- Carrer Related

During the biochemistry course we study molecular genetics. Thanks to molecular genetics we can perform analysis of the DNA components and we know the order of the nucleotide sequence, which would be the instructions to form a human being. The human being is made up of a large number of cells, and each of these cells has the same information according to the functions it performs. Therefore, each of these cells reads its information and acts. Knowing the composition of DNA is very useful in various issues present in our daily life. Thanks to the knowledge of the genetic material that is transferred from parents to children with small modifications during the different stages of generations, we can know the relationship between them, between species and thus know how we are evolving. In medicine, advances in genetics have provided knowledge that today allows us to better understand many hereditary diseases, as well as to identify bacteria that have a negative impact on the correct ...

English 4, post 2 ´The best concert'

Imagen
My first concert was the green day concert in 2017 at the bicentennial stadium in La Florida, at that time green day was my favorite band, it is a rock group from california with 4 members. As I am from Chillán I had to travel on Friday to Santiago, to be able to go to the concert on Saturday, then I had to return on Sunday because I had an important presentation at school; my friends asked me to please not to scream so much at the concert to avoid having problems in my throat when I had the presentation at school, but I did not pay much attention to them. That day was one of the best days of my life and although it was very hot the energy of the concert was incredible, there were many people and at one point the vocalist began to throw t-shirts to the public while the other members with a fire hose threw water.  On Sunday when I was going back to Chillán I was very tired and during the trip I saw many people who had also gone to the concert because they were wearing the band...

English 4, post 1, ´A country you would like to visit´

Imagen
The country I would like to visit is New Zealand, my aunt lives there for about 15 years and I would love to go to see her. New Zealand is a very quiet and safe country, the weather is not as hot as here, and there is a lot of wind all summer long. With my mom we are planning a trip to New Zealand in the near future to see my cousins and my aunt, they came to Chile in 2010, so we haven't seen each other for a long time. I would also like to go to Queenstown because they say that is the adventure capital of New Zealand. It would be great to live for a while in New Zealand, being a country with so much security, the thefts are almost nonexistent and you should not be worried in the street that they will steal your cell phone or enter your home while you are not there, the government has handled very well the issue of the pandemic because there is no case of covid and have never had to wear a mask when going out.

A subject you enjoyed to study

Imagen
My favorite subject is biology, since I started studying it in high school I loved everything related to biology; I like it a lot because I can understand how our body works, plants, animals; how cells are responsible for everything to stay well in our body seems very magical to me. This time in college we have only studied cell biology which I find impressive, how we are made up of small cells and that each one has a function in our body. I have always liked science so I was very happy when I started taking biology in high school, the same thing happened to me in college. But for me the biology classes at the university are not so much fun, maybe it is because of the context of the online classes because we are just looking at the screen and listen to the teacher talking, but still I have fun learning, during these two years I have learned many new things and also how some things I knew have been changing, with the advancement of science and research every day something new is di...

An expert in your field that you admire

Imagen
Cecilia Hidalgo is a very well known person in science, she was the first woman to receive the national science prize and is currently the director of the FONDAP Center for Molecular Studies of the Cell, at the School of Medicine.  As well as a full professor at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences. I admire her very much because she shows me that a Chilean woman can be very successful in science. Dr.Hidalgo is a biochemist and the first doctor of science at the University of Chile. She did her post-doctorate at the National Institutes of Health and was a Guggenheim Fellowship recipient. She returned to Chile at the end of 1983, and has been a professor at the Center for Scientific Studies and the School of Medicine since 1984. Cecilia Hidalgo has more than 70 publications in international journals. Her current work is the study of the molecular mechanisms that are activated by transient increases in intracellular calcium concentration in neurons and in skeletal and cardiac muscle....

How can your major make the world a better place

Imagen
Biochemistry is presente in many areas: health, biotechnology, mining, agriculture, patents and intellectual property, forensic medicine, archeology, etc. Thanks to biochemestry it has been possible to create treatments for diabetes, heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, liver diseasen and cancer. And right now biocheminsts have played a very important role in the management of pandemic, thanks to their research it has been possible to create vaccines for Covid-19. The role of biochemists is fundamental because without their intervetion there would no diagnosis that would allow a projection of the disease and without this a cure, drug or treatment could not be created. Biochemists' research also studies serious diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's, and thanks to this research it has been possible to create treatments and in the future perhaps a cure will be found, so the role of the biochemist is very important in the world and helps to make it a better place. In the futu...

A photo and its story

Imagen
This photo is very important for me, it was the first concert I went to, so it was a very special moment, Green Day was my favorite band at that time, and when they gave me the tickets for the concert I was very happy and excited, that day has been one of the happiest of my life, I had a great time and I will always remember that moment. This photo is from 2017, the concert was on a Saturday and since it was in Santiago I had to travel there on Friday, I still remember that a few days later I had a presentation at school and my friends told me not to shout too much at the concert to take care of my voice. I went to the concert with my godmother, she has been in all the important moments of my life, so that day was very special. I had a great time that day it was a lot of fun and I would like to go to a concert again. I was going to go to the Billie Eilish concert in 2020, it was going to be the week of my birthday, but because of the pandemic it was cancelled, I hope that soon this w...

A meal or food I really like

Imagen
I don't really have a favorite kind of food, it's very hard to choose one when I like almost all of them; I really like pasta, with tomato sauce, cream and mushrooms or just with cheese, there are so many different ways to eat pasta that I love, I also really like pizza, mashed potatoes and rice. I am a vegetarian so, I eat a lot of vegetables and legumes, my favorites are broccoli, cabbage and black beans, my mom cooks very well so everything she makes is delicious and that's why I like so many different kinds of food. Now we are in tangerine season, I love tangerines, they are my favorite fruit along with raspberries. I also love chocolate it's something I couldn't live without. As I am a vegetarian I care a lot about having a balanced diet so I eat fruits and vegetables every day, plus I eat legumes quite often. Since I stopped eating meat I feel more energetic and much healthier.

My Favorite Piece of Technology

Imagen
My cell phone is one of the most important objects for me and my favorite, my first cell phone I think I had it when I was 7 years old and since then I have not stopped using it. I love all the functions you can do today on a cell phone, before you could only call or send messages. But now you can take pictures, play games, watch series even buy things. I look at my cell phone as soon as I wake up and it´s the last thing I use when I go to sleep, most of the time I use it to watch instagram, listen to music or send texts by WhatsApp, I also take a lot of pictures of my pet. My cell phone keeps me connected with my friends and informs me about what´s going on in the world, especially now that we are in a pandemic and you can´t have physical contact with others. I totally recommend having a cell phone as it changes your live.

Why did i choose my major?

Imagen
I am an only child and when I was little I had no children around to play with, so I played alone with my toys.Since I was a little girl I liked animals and I played that I was the veterinarian of my stuffed animals, I also liked barbies and making clothes for them, at that time I dreamed of being a veterinarian or being a fashion designer when I grew up.  As I grew up I wasn't sure what profession I wanted, but it had to be something related to biology and chemistry since they were the subjects I liked the most.  I looked for science related careers and found biochemistry and it became my first choice as it had everything I liked, my second choice was veterinary medicine because my love for animals never left. When I applied to college I stayed in my first choice and was very happy. Despite that I have only had online classes and not seeing my classmates in person I have, made several friends and even though the college experience has been very stressful I am not giving...
